Oregon’s Strongest Defender of Religious Freedom

Who could imagine that in the United States our 1st Amendment rights to freedom of religion could be threatened. Yet, across the nation these cherished rights are eroding right before our eyes. Here are few recent examples gathered by the Alliance Defense Fund:

  • A then-second-grade student at a public school in New Jersey was told that she could not sing “Awesome God” in an after-school talent show.
  • A pastor of a church in Arizona was ordered to stop holding meetings or Bible studies in his private home.
  • Five Christian men were threatened with arrest for sharing their faith on a public sidewalk in Virginia.
  • A Christian student at a university in Missouri was threatened with having her degree withheld because she refused to write a letter to the state legislature expressing her support for homosexual adoption.
  • A pro-life nurse at a hospital in New York was forced to participate in a late-term abortion, even though her workplace had agreed in writing to honor her religious convictions.

Oregon Family Council has a strong record of success defending religious rights. For example during the 2007 Legislative Session, a bill expanding gay rights included language that would have required churches, private Christian schools and other religious charities to hire homosexual employees, even though the practice went against their faith and written employee standards. With the help of pastors and concerned citizens OFC was able to make a compelling case for an ironclad religious exemption protecting religious freedom in Oregon.
