Will You Pray?
In Oregon and all across the country, legislators are meeting in their state capitol buildings to propose legislation, create budgets, and pass laws. These elected officials hold significant power, making decisions that not only affect our wallets, but legislating issues influencing religious liberties, size of government, and life and death.
During this time, it is especially critical that as followers of Christ, we pray for our leaders in government. Writing and calling our legislators, attending legislative hearings, and staying informed on the issues is important, but prayer is the most effective action we can take.
Ephesians 6:12 shines light on the reality that we are not merely in the midst of a political battle but a spiritual battle. Paul warns, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (NIV).
Paul further writes in 1 Timothy 2:1-2, “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people – for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.”
Will you commit to praying for your leaders and the decisions that are being made at all levels of government? Here are several prayer points to start with:
- Fear of the Lord
- Salvation & Revival
We can take heart that our prayers are not fruitless. Rather, God promises that “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective” (James 5:16b). Furthermore, as 1 John 5:14-15 states, “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us – whatever we ask – we know that we have what we asked of him.” When we pray the Father’s will, we can be assured that he hears, cares, and is working on our behalf.
