Beginning The Rehabilitation of Christians

“America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” Abraham Lincoln

Do the rights of one trump the rights of another? That appears to be the view point of Oregon Labor Commissioner Brad Avakian. Avakian has made his stance on religious liberties pretty clear from the beginning of the Sweet Cakes case, and as the deciding voice in determining the fate of Christian bakery owners Aaron and Melissa Klein it seems that impartiality was not a factor when it came to his decision.

Avakian’s now infamous quote “Our goal is never to shut down a business. The goal is to rehabilitate” clearly shows his views against the rights of individuals to exercise their religious beliefs. There is also the question of Avakian’s connections to Basic Rights Oregon, the largest LGBT advocacy group in the state.

On top of issuing a devastating $135,000 to be paid to the Bowman-Cryers by the Kleins, Avakian has declared an effective gag order to prevent the Kleins from speaking out about their religious views. Now trampling the First Amendment not once but twice in a single case a clear message is being sent to Christians not just in Oregon but across the country. If one elected official can strip the first Amendment rights of American Citizens, what more can they do?

“If the freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter.” George Washington

When we have a US Senator that says this: “Certainly the First Amendment says that in institutions of faith that there is absolute power to, you know, to observe deeply held religious beliefs. But I don’t think it extends far beyond that,” Tammy Baldwin D-WI. It is concerning that elected officials who take an oath to defend the Constitution are doing the exact opposite.

There is a clear disdain among some elected government officials regarding the First Amendment rights of people. It seems to focus on an agenda that promotes the rights of one group while taking away the rights of another. We must pay attention to what is taking place and fight it. There needs to be a renewal of the values that set this country up to be so great.

“Conformity is the jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth.” John F. Kennedy

A friend of mine who immigrated to the US a few years ago told me that the greatest thing about this country is the ability that you get to choose your life from your religion to your job to the neighborhood you live in, it is your decision. As Americans we may take that freedom for granted sometimes, but we must wake up and realize that our freedom is in danger.

“Freedom is the right to tell people what they do not want to hear.” George Orwell

As President Lincoln stated, our own worst enemy will be ourselves. If we do not defend within our own walls, the freedoms we hold so dear, we will lose them.
