Helpful Hints for Calling Your Legislator

Making a phone call to your legislator is a fast and effective way to communicate your opinion to your legislator and voice your thoughts. Be sure to be courteous and respectful. Please don’t engage in debate. If you and your legislator do not agree on a particular piece of legislation the best thing you can do is get your friends and neighbors to call and voice their concern too. The more voices the better.

Here are a few hints that should help you as you call:

1. Tell them you are a voting member of their district. This will make everything you say from that point forward very important for them to hear.

“This is John Smith, and you’re my representative…”

2. State why you are calling.

“I am calling in opposition to civil unions and minority status for gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender individuals.”

3. Explain why you have this position, but be brief.

“I think the legislation is totally unnecessary, it not only gives even transsexuals minority status, it gives gays and lesbians civil unions which to me is just like gay marriage...”

4. Be courteous, but be firm. We want the legislator and their staff to have a positive opinion about the character of the people opposed to this legislation.

“I just wanted to call and tell him that and to ask you that you please not support civil unions and minority status for gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender individuals. Thanks.”

5. Call right away.

6. If the line is busy, keep trying.

7. Try to call a couple times a week.
